I grew up in Arizona amongst the desert creatures and within the craft and artisan community, attending local craft fairs as an exhibitor with my mother, who is a potter.
I have adventurer's spirit and since a youth, have found ways to pick myself up and visit far off places.
I attended Antioch College for several years and graduated with a BFA in sculpture from the School of Visual Arts, NYC in 1986.
Went to Plainfield, Vermont in '89 and began to teach art workshops and creating paper mache puppets, celebrating our interdependence with all of life, organizing an annual "All Species Day Parade" and seasonal community
JANICE WALRAFEN
pageants.
I continue these activities today along with making unique handcrafted tiles inspired by my love of nature.
I hope my work offers you the same joy they give to me. In addition to these reproduction tiles, I make one-of-a-kind tile murals and custom designs.
As an artist, I find myself responding to the deep respect and awe I have for the living Earth and find myself creating art about my relationship to all living beings.
In 1988 I encountered a group of artists celebrating our relationship with All Species Projects; creating masks, costumes, songs and theatre, celebrating this interdependence.
For over 15 years I have been creating community celebrations and parades with this at it’s heart. My “art” has been making art accessible to all, through these events, teaching and my sculptures.
