I have come to photography through a series of experiences that have shaped my technical knowledge and my eye for form and color.
In 1970 I took my first art class at the Weaving Workshop, a studio in Chicago.
Sweeping the floor to pay for tuition was the first step to becoming the owner of the studio the following year. When the workshop was sold in 1979 it had become the focal point of textile arts in Chicago.
In 1980, with my new husband and business partner, MSM Design was formed. For the next 26 years, MSM has designed and built technical equipment for the film industry.
The company reached new heights when it designed and built 3-D cameras that NASA used on the Space Shuttle and Space Station in the late 1990’s. This equipment will be launched once again in 2008.
In 1996, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences coveted Science and Technical award, was awarded to MSM Design. In 2004 the National Stereoscopic Association bestowed on myself and my husband, the William C Darrah Fellow Award for outstanding advances in 3D photography.
It’s with a love for color and form, enhanced with pushing the envelope of picture taking technology that I came to looking through the viewfinder and framing the world.
Through experimentation I have moved to the digital side of photography. Whether on the water, or in the air, nature gives me an abundant palette, which needs little manipulation in the computer. I now live with my camera nearby so I can share the beauty in my world with others.
Artist Statement
My camera allows me an intimate connection to the splendor that is part of this universe. Removing the harsh realties of the outer world, the lens helps to focus my field of view to the colors, textures and rhythms that are hidden at first glance.
There are many days when I open my eyes and see the tips of the trees and
the early morning sky and I want to seize these first moments when the world is fresh and sweet and clear. With camera in hand I head to the pond to capture the dreamlike qualities of the water’s reflections.
It offers up image after image of intimate details distorted by wind dancing over the surface, or waves being caught and sent back by the shore.
It is momentary view, a nanosecond of time offering another reality at is filled with wonder, beauty and serenity, replaced again and again and again.
Though shot digitally, these limited edition prints are composed in camera as I wish to limit my time at the computer and spend the hours with the water, wind, and light.
All images are printed using archival inks and papers and framed using archival materials and non-glare archival glass allowing the image captured to be permanent as compared to what is offered by nature.
